David Hougland, Director of Sports Broadcasting, Texas Tech University

David Hougland, who serves as the Director of Sports Broadcasting, is in his 16th year with the Red Raiders. He and his staff coordinate the video needs for all 17 of Tech’s intercollegiate sports, while also producing weekly coaches’ shows for football, men’s basketball, and baseball. Additionally, Hougland oversees the video content on the athletic department Website and the athletics FTP site, the Webcasting of Tech sporting events, production of three video screens, and the Texas Tech Sports Network.

Under Hougland’s guidance, Texas Tech was the first university in the Big 12 Conference with the capabilities to run three video screens from one remote location. Hougland designed and oversaw the installation of the fiber optic network and state-of-the-art control room that allows him to run video screens located in Jones AT&T Stadium, the United Spirit Arena, and Dan Law Field. With these capabilities, he creates the game-day productions for football, baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and other entertainment events held at Tech’s athletic venues.

During basketball and baseball seasons, Hougland serves as the executive producer/director for home and away games broadcast on the Texas Tech Sports Network, which are carried by television stations throughout Texas and on regional sports networks. He also developed and currently maintains the athletic department FTP site, which allows media outlets across the nation to download game highlights for use in their telecasts.

A native of Houston, Hougland serves as Texas Tech’s liaison with the national television networks in preparation for numerous Red Raider telecasts. He also manages the production of highlight tapes for coaches, television networks, and other media services, as well as various Red Raider Club functions.

Aside from his work in athletics, Hougland coordinates national television interview requests for the University’s Office of Communications and Marketing and serves as the Chairman of the Lubbock Independent School District (LISD) TV Advisory Committee.

Hougland served as a video student assistant at Texas Tech before graduating in 1993. He worked in production at Cox Cable in Lubbock and John Crowe Productions in Houston before his current position was created. Hougland and his wife, Michelle, reside in Lubbock with their sons, Spencer and Landon.

Randy Flick, Senior Audio Mixer, HBO Sports

Randy Flick is an Emmy Award-winning television audio mixer. Randy has worked on major college and professional sports and entertainment broadcasts for every major network, including ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and ESPN, during his 30-year career. Randy’s broadcast experiences include baseball, football (Super Bowls), basketball, hockey, golf, championship ice skating, gymnastics, skiing, and U.S. Open Tennis. On the entertainment side, he has worked on the Tony Awards, Presidential inaugural galas, and various TV game shows. For the past 10 years, Randy has served as senior audio mixer for HBO Boxing and for the past 26 years, he has held the same position for World Wrestling Entertainment.

Mark Womack, Executive Associate Commissioner, Southeastern Conference

Mark Womack joined the Southeastern Conference staff in 1978 upon graduation from the University of Alabama and has served the conference in numerous capacities ranging from Assistant Public Relations Director to Acting Commissioner.

His current duties include negotiating and monitoring television contracts for football, basketball and other conference sports; liaison between post-season bowls and member institutions (assisted in the development of the Bowl Championship Series); oversee the conference budget including the receipt and distribution of conference funds to member institutions; liaison with conference athletics directors; oversee operation of the SEC Football Championship Game and the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments and conference scheduling for football and basketball.

Womack has served on the NCAA Championship/Competition Cabinet and is the former chairman of the NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Licensing Subcommittee and is a member of the NCAA Football Issues Committee. He is a member of the Board of Directors of NCAA Football and chairs the Budget and Finance Committee of NCAA Football.

Womack began his duties with the SEC as Assistant Public Relations Director with responsibility for publicizing all conference sports. In 1979 Womack was promoted to Assistant to the Commissioner for Information and Administration, continuing his media responsibilities as well as working in areas of eligibility and financial aid for sprig sports and office-wide administrative duties.

In 1981, Commissioner Boyd McWhorter named Womack Assistant Commissioner with responsibility for conference championships, meetings and office administration. In 1988, Womack served two months as Acting Commissioner for the SEC when Commissioner Harvey Schiller accepted the job of Executive Director of the United States Olympic Committee before deciding to return to the SEC. Upon his return he promoted Womack to Associate Commissioner. Womack again served the Conference as Acting Commissioner for four months during 1989-90 before Roy Kramer was hired as Commissioner in 1990. Kramer promoted Womack to Executive Associate Commissioner upon his arrival.

While at Alabama, Womack worked in the athletic department’s sports information office for two years before receiving his degree in Communications with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Promotional Management. Womack grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and attended Tuscaloosa High school where he was a three-year starter at quarterback, leading his team to the semifinals of the state championship his senior year.

Womack is married to the former Stephanie Keller and they are the parents of a nine-year old son, John David.

David Riffle, Video Board Coordinator, Arizona State University Athletics

David Riffle is in his 11th year as coordinator of video board operations at Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium. He oversees video board operations for Sun Devil football, volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, wrestling, and gymnastics as well as the Insight Bowl. Riffle’s responsibilities include graphics creation/editing, video pre-production, instant replay, producing, directing, technical direction, and engineering.

In addition, he continues to serve as the video system coordinator and engineer/stage manager for on field presentation at University of Phoenix Stadium for Arizona Cardinals football and the Fiesta Bowl.

Prior to being named video board coordinator, Riffle served as engineer in chief for score board productions at Sun Devil Stadium from 1992-2000. Highlights included ASU Sun Devil football, every Fiesta Bowl (three of which were NCAA Football National Championship games), Cardinals NFL football, and Super Bowl XXX in 1996. Overall, Riffle has worked three Super Bowls with NFL Films frequency coordination group.

From 1987-2009, Riffle also lent his skills to KAET PBS TV at Arizona State University. He as in charge of engineering, tape/video, editing, lighting, set design, and set construction. During his final three years at KAET, he delved further into the production side, when he shot and edited for short form documentary/long form documentary, shot daily news and public affairs content, and coordinated coverage of election debates state-wide.

Ken Cleary, Director of New Media, University of North Carolina

Ken Cleary is in his third year as Director of New Media for University of North Carolina Athletics. In his role, Cleary oversees all commercial video production for the department. This includes television shows, video board productions for eight sports in five different venues, multimedia support for TarHeelBlue.com, live Web streaming, DVD production, and other commercial video projects.

Prior to joining Carolina Athletics in a permanent capacity, Cleary was the president and owner of RingFire Marketing from 2001 to 2007. RingFire provided video services for video board productions, Internet streaming, and other video projects. RingFire also provided regional production services for PlayOn! Sports as part of its ACC Select Web streaming platform.

From 1993 until 2001, Cleary worked for TSI Soccer, a North Carolina-based soccer retailer. Cleary eventually became Vice President of Marketing with responsibilities overseeing creative services, marketing, and promotions for the company’s catalog, brick-and-mortar retail, and Web businesses as TSI Soccer grew into one of the nation’s largest sporting goods specialty retailers. Cleary also worked on the team managing TSI Soccer’s sponsorships of Major League Soccer and the 1999 Women’s World Cup Finals.

Cleary is a 1991 graduate of the University of North Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. After graduation, Cleary worked for two years as a reporter/anchor for WCHL radio in Chapel Hill. He’s had a hard time getting radio out of his blood, having worked as everything from a producer to a gopher for sports radio stations and the Tar Heel Sports Network through the years.

David Missall, National Market Development, Sennheiser

As a National Market Development manager for Sennheiser Electronic Corporation, David Missall consults prominent news and sports broadcasters, theaters, and live music stages on multi-channel wireless installations and events, system design, and frequency coordination. Missall has been with the Sennheiser Electronic Corporation for five years.

Ken Kerschbaumer, Editorial Director, Sports Video Group

Ken Kerschbaumer has been editorial director of the Sports Video Group since 2005 and has been writing about how sports networks and leagues use video and audio technology to deliver a quality TV experience since 1991. He began his career in 1991 at Television Broadcast magazine before joining Cahners where he was editor of Digital Broadcasting magazine. In 2000 he joined Broadcasting & Cable magazine as Senior Editor of Technology. Seven years later he helped co-found the Sports Video Group with Paul Gallo and Marty Porter.

Chris Turner, Senior Director, SEC Programming, ESPN

Chris Turner was named senior director, SEC programming in January of 2009. Turner joined ESPN in 1995 after the company acquired Creative Sports, for which he served as programming coordinator. In 1997, ESPN combined its OCC division and Creative Sports to form ESPN Regional Television (ERT), the nation’s largest syndicator of college sports programming.

During his tenure with ERT, Turner’s syndication responsibilities grew to include Big East, Big 12, and C-USA basketball, as well as Mountain West football.  He also co-managed ERT’s Events Division where he was instrumental in growing the portfolio to more than 20 owned and operated events, including six post-season college football bowl games, six multi-team men’s college basketball events, and the ESPN National Golf Challenge presented by Callaway.

As senior director, SEC programming, Turner is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of ESPN’s historic 15-year rights agreement with the conference.

Turner earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Westminster College in 1985 and a Master of Science degree majoring in Sports Administration from the University of Kansas in 1993.
