Tim Pollard, Associate Professor, Ball State University

Pollard-Ball-State

Tim Pollard is in his 12th year as an associate professor in the Department of Telecommunications at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.  Professor Pollard teaches beginning and advanced video production classes.  Academically, he serves on several advisory boards within the College of Communications, Information, and Media, and the university, and is one of the founding members of the Visual, Imagination, and Animation (VIA) Laboratory.  This lab, which services the entire university, offers state-of-the-art production software to create non-linear video and 3D animation.

Pollard was integral in the development of the David Letterman Communication and Media Building at BSU.  This building houses an expanded surround sound digital studio space, along with individual audio post-production suites and classrooms, including two HD theater-style rooms for high-end presentations.  Because of this effort, he was a recipient of a regional EMMY Award in 2008 for “Technical Achievement.”  In 2006, Professor Pollard helped to create an interactive television news class with computer science, journalism, and telecommunications department students who produced the first live, interactive news brief in the university’s history.  This endeavor is helping the university step up its already highly rated technology emphasis by introducing interactivity to the campus and to give graduating students from this program the opportunity to compete for top-of-the-line jobs in this niche industry.

He is one of the founders of NewsLink Indiana, a convergence news laboratory allowing students to “immerse” for a semester working on TV, radio, Web, and print news stories while receiving credit for an entire semester’s work.  As a result of this endeavor, Professor Pollard was a recipient of an EMMY award from the Cleveland chapter of the National Television Academy for “Technical Achievement.”

In 2008, along with three other colleagues, Pollard began an immersive learning project called “Ball State Sports Link.”  This project involved 12 undergraduate, and one graduate, students working all semester on sports production in a multi-platform environment.  Students produced packages on athletes, aired eight half-hour television shows, and created eleven remotes, including volleyball, basketball, swimming and diving, and soccer.  All events, and stories, were streamed on www.ballstatesports.com.

In 2009, Pollard began collaboration with the College of Architecture and Planning to re-orient its bachelor’s program in visual design to include more three-dimensional (3D) characteristics.  This includes the students working with video programs, using the university’s 3D set, to create new templates for the “virtual world” sets.  This unique opportunity will allow architecture students to graduate into a new, niche, world where 3D set designs will become more prominent in media production.

In November and December of 2000, Professor Pollard was a visiting professor at National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China.  He taught an introduction to American television news for a class composed of upper classmen at NCCU.  Also, Professor Pollard traveled to Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina, in July 2000, to attend an international conference, which taught Bosnian journalists how to use the Internet for newsgathering purposes.

Pollard has worked on several freelance productions, including commercials for Star Financial Bank and Monday Night Football for ABC.  Pollard is a member of the Broadcast Education Association (BEA), and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).

Before Ball State, Pollard spent 15 years in the corporate world at CNN.  From 1994 to 1998, he was the operations manager for CNN’s Washington, D.C., bureau.  In this capacity, Pollard was responsible for all air product emanating from Washington.  This included both radio (CNN Radio and CNN Noticias Radio) as well as TV (CNN, CNNI, CNNfn, CNN Newsroom, CNNSI, CNN en Espanol, and CNN Newsbeam).  Pollard was also the operational liaison with the other television networks in Washington concerning “pooled” coverage of events.  During his tenure, CNN was pool producer for President Clinton’s State of the Union message, the Republican response, Oval Office speeches, and White House South Lawn events.  Unilaterally, Pollard was operations manager for several “Larry King Live” programs involving Washington dignitaries including the first live interview with President Clinton and Vice President Gore from the White House, and the first U.S. interview with Yassar Arafat after his meeting with President Clinton.   Lastly, Professor Pollard was responsible for all entry-level news hires within the bureau and he handled capital and operating budgets for the bureau on a yearly basis.

From 1984 to 1994, Pollard was field operations supervisor for CNN’s field operations department.  In this area, Pollard traveled around the world covering some of the major events of the day.  This includes seven Presidential conventions; all Reagan-Gorbachev summits; Bush-Gorbachev summits; Emperor Hirohito’s funeral from Tokyo; post-Gulf War tour of the Middle East; and most major domestic stories during these 10 years.  Pollard also had capital budget responsibility for all domestic and international bureaus, helping the network switchover from U-matic videotape to betacam videotape without missing any news coverage.

From 1983 to 1984, Pollard was studio operations supervisor for CNN’s evening programming.  Twenty-five entry-level people reported to Professor Pollard during this time.

Pollard began his career in 1983 at CNN as an entry-level “video journalist” running studio camera, TelePrompTer, and floor directing.

Before CNN, Pollard was a production assistant for Owens-Illinois in Toledo, Ohio, covering that FORTUNE 500’s daily events for its corporate television unit.  He also worked part-time for WCMU-TV in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, as a production assistant for this PBS station while pursuing bachelor and master’s degrees from Central Michigan University.
